I have asked, with proper approvals, Deacon David to start a kind of apprenticeship in parish administration and leadership. That means he will be learning by doing, serving on the Pastoral and Finance Councils and becoming familiar with parish office procedures. St. Margaret’s has long been a well-run parish and is a great place to learn. If Bishop Johnston ever calls on Deacon David to take parish leadership in a parish that doesn’t have a priest as pastor, he will have the skills he needs. Deacons provide day-by-day ministry and leadership in some diocesan parishes right now, and it is reasonable to expect that more deacons and even skilled lay men and women will be serving parishes as administrators.
