Annointing of the Sick
When illness or weakness touches our lives, the Church responds with prayer and care. The Anointing of the Sick brings God’s grace, healing, and reassurance to those in need and to their families.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “by the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord” (CCC 1499).

Through the Anointing of the Sick, Christ sacramentally offers strength, peace, courage, and, according to God’s will, even physical healing.

Anointing of the Sick is not reserved only for the final moments of life. Any Catholic facing serious illness, surgery, or the frailty that often accompanies aging may receive the sacrament. It may also be received again if a condition worsens or a new serious illness develops.

Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen once wrote, “Pain and suffering are not obstacles to holiness, but opportunities for it.” In moments of illness and weakness, Christ does not abandon us but draws near with mercy and compassion.

Through the Anointing of the Sick, the Church bears witness to the hope that even in suffering and uncertainty, we are never alone. Christ walks with us, offering healing, mercy, and the promise of eternal life.
