The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process through which men and women are prepared for full initiation into the Catholic faith. This process includes weekly formation lessons, during which participants will discuss matters of faith, learn more about what the Catholic Church teaches, and grow in community through the shared process of initiation. The process includes three rites, spaced throughout the year, which culminate at the Easter Vigil (the night before Easter) through the celebration of the three sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion. The unbaptized, referred to as catechumens, receive all three sacraments at the Easter Vigil, while those previously baptized in another denomination, called candidates, receive the sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Communion. Both catechumens and candidates will also celebrate their First Reconciliation (or Confession) as part of their initiation journey.
